July Life Skill: Kindness

July Life Skill:

Kindness

"Helping Others Even When You Don't Have To!"

At Peak Performance we build our kids up to be champions in life! One of the ways we do this, is through our life skills program. Each month we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, giving them examples, asking them to give their coaches examples, working on each Life Skill at home and school, and we also incorporate the Life Skill into our classes.

This months Life Skill is Kindness: helping others when you don't have to.

In every class at Peak Performance MMA Southlake there is an emphasis on partner work and non-competitive games.  Working with a partner to learn combative skills requires cooperation and  compassion.  Both partners must work together to learn the skill.  They must also be aware that the things they are doing can hurt or injure their classmate, so they must behave with self control and compassion.  Compassionate behavior is rewarded with skills acquisition and fun!  You get nothing out of hurting your classmates.

Someone once told me they believed Martial Arts has nothing to do with Bully Prevention.  I have a feeling they have never been in a quality martial arts class in their life.  Self awareness and self control are the hallmarks of martial arts training.  The children at Peak Performance practice compassion by helping each other learn.  The higher belt ranks and more mature students have a responsibility to help the beginner students to learn what they have learned.  These kids know what its like to be new and to need help.   Understanding how their bodies work, how it feels feel when it gets hurt and the terrible results of hurting others is the key to compassion.  Kids (and adults) that have no self control or understanding of the effects of violence are the ones who use it without care.

Frustration and anger can be converted to calm compassionate problem solving through this kind of training.  But beyond the benefits of problem solving is the skill of kindness.   By regularly practicing the kind act of helping others a child grows into a solutions oriented adult who takes responsibility for their actions proactively seeks to improve their world.

At Peak Performance MMA Southlake we’re training kids to be Superheroes who save the world using kindness.

What benefits do martial arts offer that teams sports don't?

Self Defense
By teaching your child how to defend themselves, ether standing up and/or on the ground, we are teaching them the best forms of self defense. Without a doubt Muay Thai Kickboxing is the best form of stand up martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the best form of ground martial arts.

Most martial arts schools only focus on the stand up self defense or the ground self defense. At Peak Performance MMA we specialize in both! We have the highest ranked BJJ AND Muay Thai Coach in the area. We are always working to improve our curriculum to make sure your child is learning the best skills.

Self Confidence
At Peak Performance MMA we believe in not only making champions in martial arts, we believe in making champions in life! Our programs are designed to increase your child's confidence, self esteem, and help to make them a better person!

Discipline
Having your child involved in mixed martial arts will teach them discipline, respect, and self control. These necessary tools will help them throughout life, as well as avoid fights, and defend themselves when conflict in unavoidable.

Individual Achievement
Instead of trying to "make the team" or sitting on the bench, everyone is able to participate. They are able to rank up (belt/strips), compete, and progress as an individual.

Gender Equality
Martial Arts is one of the few sports where boys and girls can play/train together.

Weight Control
Martial Arts classes are one of the best ways for your child to get in shape and lead a healthy life. Unlike team sports, where a lot of kids sit on the bench, in martial arts training every child is pushed to make themselves better. This is very important in this day and age where kids just want to play video games. The workouts are fun and a lot of the time the kids don't even realize they are exercising while they are learning self defense.

Never Ending Season
Unlike team sports, which have seasons, they are able to train all year round!

If you're like the many parents whose kids take our martial arts classes... you don't just want your child to learn self-defense. You want them to also learn respect, focus and discipline for a successful future. And you want them to get great exercise for health and wellness.

Your child will get all of these and more in every one of our Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville, Keller, Trophy Club, Roanoke kids martial arts classes. And our fun, expert instructors will be there to guide them every step of the way. Click here to learn more and enroll your child today.

May Life Skill: Self-Respect

May Life Skill:

Self-Respect

"Pride and Confidence in Oneself!"

This months Life Skill is Self-Respect: pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity.

Respect for self and others drives important life decisions, from the friends we choose, to the opportunities we reach out to (or hide from). Why focus on self-respect in young children? Though there's a big difference between a four-year-old and a 10-year-old (or even between two 10-year-olds), at the end of the day we want our kids to be competent, confident, and independent. Respect for self helps build those traits - traits which will help kids through the challenging preteen and teen years, when kids start making choices on their own, with lots of peer influence. Respect for others encourages empathy and helps kids learn behavioural boundaries, especially under duress.

The added bonus is that respect protects kids from bullying. Kids grounded in respect for self and others make less vulnerable targets, don't seek out bullies as friends, won’t bully others, and won’t stand by when others are bullied. “Beth said mean things about me to Sara, trying to be cool and make friends. Can I trust her? Is she my friend?” Knowing you can rely on your friends for support and protection is a powerful stabilizer. Keeping kids anchored in respect vastly reduces bullying and many other discipline problems in our homes, schools, and communities.

At Peak Performance we use lessons on the mat when instilling Self-Respect. Most kids fear making a mistake while rolling and having to tap, of letting their teammates down, or of not getting “the” submission that would have won them the match. By understanding that kids will make mistakes, by allowing kids to make mistakes, and by allowing kids to learn from those mistakes, as a coach we can help kids lose their fear and subsequently, the kids can roll a harder, more focused game, and have more self-respect for oneself!

April Life Skill: Courage

April Life Skill:

Courage

"Courage is the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous."

This months Life Skill is Courage: The ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous.

COURAGE is one of those magical qualities possessed by few, but found in all great individuals both in and outside of sports. Whether it’s standing up for what you believe in despite it’s unpopularity, remaining calm and composed under the heat of intense competitive pressure, consistently moving towards your fears and insecurities or maintaining a grace and dignity when you fail miserably, courage wears a number of different clothes. You don’t have to be a mature adult to be courageous. Children sometimes demonstrate far more courageous behavior than adults. You don’t have to be a world-class athlete to be courageous. As a matter of fact, you don’t even have to be that athletically inclined to develop and fine-tune this quality, which is one of the cornerstones of mental toughness.

At Peak Performance we use all of these examples when instilling Courage . Example: When your child has stepped onto the mat, maybe for the first time, maybe it is against a larger opponent, or maybe it's to face a student that has been training far longer, finding the courage within themselves to remain calm and composed under the heat of intense competitive pressure. At the end of class, we go over some bad situations and ask them how they overcame it. This encourages them to see the success in being courageous!

March Life Skill: Determination

March Life Skill:

Determination

"Determination is doing the right thing and never giving up!"

This months Life Skill is Determination: Doing the right thing and never giving up.

Determination is one the greatest assets we can possess.  Determination can bring out the best in us.  Determination is the tool we use to defeat discouragement.  Determination is the tool we use to overcome temporary failure to prevent failure from becoming permanent.  Determination is the tool we use to produce patience.

Determination builds character.   It helps us become a more reliable person.   It helps us meet our commitments.    It helps us prioritize and manage our time to maximize positive results.
Determination is the tool we use to give us the will to win. Determination is the tool we use to help us win in spite of our limitations.  Determination is the tool we use to dig ourselves out of a hole.  Determination is the tool we use to improve our relationships.   Determination is the tool we use to reach our goals.  Determination is the tool we use to succeed.

At Peak Performance we use all of these examples when instilling Determination. Example: When your child is training and finds them-self in a situation that they might want to quit or give up, we coach and encourage them to find a solution or an escape from a bad position. At the end of class, we go over some bad situations and ask them how they overcame it. This encourages them to see the success in being determined!
