January Life Skill: Initiative

January Life Skill:

Initiative

Initiative is doing the right things without being told." ~ Elbert Hubbard

At Peak Performance we build our kids up to be champions in life! One of the ways we do this, is through our life skills program. Each month we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, giving them examples, asking them to give their coaches examples, working on each Life Skill at home and school, and we also incorporate the Life Skill into our classes.

This months Life Skill is Initiative. We will learn that we are old enough to remember we should brush our teeth before going to bed and if we see that our room is messy, we should clean it up without being asked. We will the importance of practicing and doing our homework without being told by our parents.

Parent Tip of the Month: This month show your children you have initiative by choosing to eat healthy and ercise, instead of drive through dinner, make a healthy dinner at least three times a week for family time and get the kids involved.

Get the whole family involved in a weekly exercise that can also help them in their martial arts training like taking a walk, a run, or even working out on a bag at home. (It's a great stress reliever, and your kids will love the new quality time they have with you.)

Remember, you are your child's BIGGEST role model. They want to be just like YOU!

Here is a link with Harry and his coach explaining Initiative.

What benefits do martial arts offer that teams sports don't?

Self Defense
By teaching your child how to defend themselves, ether standing up and/or on the ground, we are teaching them the best forms of self defense. Without a doubt Muay Thai Kickboxing is the best form of stand up martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the best form of ground martial arts.

Most martial arts schools only focus on the stand up self defense or the ground self defense. At Peak Performance MMA we specialize in both! We have the highest ranked BJJ AND Muay Thai Coach in the area. We are always working to improve our curriculum to make sure your child is learning the best skills.

Self Confidence
At Peak Performance MMA we believe in not only making champions in martial arts, we believe in making champions in life! Our programs are designed to increase your child's confidence, self esteem, and help to make them a better person!

Discipline
Having your child involved in mixed martial arts will teach them discipline, respect, and self control. These necessary tools will help them throughout life, as well as avoid fights, and defend themselves when conflict in unavoidable.

Individual Achievement
Instead of trying to "make the team" or sitting on the bench, everyone is able to participate. They are able to rank up (belt/strips), compete, and progress as an individual.

Gender Equality
Kids Martial Arts is one of the few sports where boys and girls can play/train together.

Weight Control
Kids Martial Arts classes are one of the best ways for your child to get in shape and lead a healthy life. Unlike team sports, where a lot of kids sit on the bench, in martial arts training every child is pushed to make themselves better. This is very important in this day and age where kids just want to play video games. The workouts are fun and a lot of the time the kids don't even realize they are exercising while they are learning self defense.

Never Ending Season
Unlike team sports, which have seasons, they are able to train all year round!

If you're like the many parents whose kids take our martial arts classes... you don't just want your child to learn self-defense. You want them to also learn respect, focus and discipline for a successful future. And you want them to get great exercise for health and wellness.

Your child will get all of these and more in every one of our Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville, Keller, Trophy Club, Roanoke kids martial arts classes. And our fun, expert instructors will be there to guide them every step of the way. Click here to learn more and enroll your child today.

If you live in the following towns of Fort Worth, Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville, Trophy Club, Roanoke, Lewisville, Coppell, Euless, Bedford, North Richland Hills, and Keller then you and children are close enough to come train with us!

December Life Skill: Appreciation

December Life Skill:

Appreciation

“Appreciation can make a day - even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary." ~ Margaret Cousins

This months Life Skill is Appreciation. We will learn to be grateful for the gifts we receive during the holidays, and we will learn to appreciate our parents and teachers for the everyday things that they do for us. We'll also learn to appreciate our toys and take care of them.

Parent Tip of the Month: Show your children you appreciate them by simply hanging a picture that they drew for you on the refrigerator for everyone to see. Show your appreciation to your child's school teacher and instructors, and let them see you complementing them, so your child will feel proud of their teachers and themselves.

By demonstrating appreciation in your own life, your child will grow up understanding that family and friends is what really matters in life and the fun memories that they will take with them.

Remember, you are your child's BIGGEST role model. They want to be just like YOU!

November Life Skill: Politeness

November Life Skill:

Politeness

“Politeness is an inexpensive way of making friends.” – William Feather

At Peak Performance we build our kids up to be champions in life! One of the ways we do this, is through our life skills program. Each month we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, giving them examples, asking them to give their coaches examples, working on each Life Skill at home and school, and we also incorporate the Life Skill into our classes.

This months Life Skill is Politeness. We will learn that being kind to new kids can create lasting friendships. Helping with simple tasks around the house can really make a difference and shows you care and respect your parents. We will also learn that having good table manners shows a lot about who we are as a person.

Parent Tip of the Month: This month be more aware of how you speak and your actions toward your loved ones, friends and others you may not even know. You might not know it, but your little monkey is watching you like a hawk, and if you want your children to be polite and respectful toward others, then so should you.

This month go out of your way, especially in-front of your children, to show a little more politeness to others, and you will find them imitating you.

Remember, you are your child's BIGGEST role model. They want to be just like you!

October Life Skill: Bravery

  October Life Skill:

Bravery

“Courage is doing what you’re afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you’re scared.” – Edward Vernon Rickenbacker

This months Life Skill is Bravery. We will be learning about the importance of being brave and doing whats right even though you're afraid. Through Harry's adventures, he will be teaching us how being brave is standing up to a bully, or giving a speech in front of a class.

Parent Tip of the Month: Set the Example. We often talk here about how the eyes of our children are always on us. That most definitely applies here. Our kids’ prime examples of bravery are most likely going to come from you. Allow them to witness you stepping out of your comfort zones. If you are terrified of roller-coasters, face your fear with them and ride that monster at the park. Maybe you are afraid dancing makes you look like an idiot. Dance with them.

Courage is basically wisdom, and much can be gained just by talking. There are no stats to prove this, but it could be contended that 99% of all problems could be solved with a little common sense and real and honest communication. Talk to your child constantly and openly. Share with him things that happened to you at his age and how you dealt with them. Encourage him and create an environment where he feels safe to share the important things going on his private life. If your child can openly talk to you about his problems, then you are able to help him come up with real solutions.

Here is a link with Harry's coach explaining bravery.

Your facial expressions, gestures and tone of voice convey your own enthusiasm for the job at hand. If you don't have enthusiasm for it, they won't either.

July Life Skill: Kindness

July Life Skill:

Kindness

"Helping Others Even When You Don't Have To!"

This months Life Skill is Kindness: helping others when you don't have to.

In every class at Peak Performance MMA Southlake there is an emphasis on partner work and non-competitive games.  Working with a partner to learn combative skills requires cooperation and  compassion.  Both partners must work together to learn the skill.  They must also be aware that the things they are doing can hurt or injure their classmate, so they must behave with self control and compassion.  Compassionate behavior is rewarded with skills acquisition and fun!  You get nothing out of hurting your classmates.

Someone once told me they believed Martial Arts has nothing to do with Bully Prevention.  I have a feeling they have never been in a quality martial arts class in their life.  Self awareness and self control are the hallmarks of martial arts training.  The children at Peak Performance practice compassion by helping each other learn.  The higher belt ranks and more mature students have a responsibility to help the beginner students to learn what they have learned.  These kids know what its like to be new and to need help.   Understanding how their bodies work, how it feels feel when it gets hurt and the terrible results of hurting others is the key to compassion.  Kids (and adults) that have no self control or understanding of the effects of violence are the ones who use it without care.

Frustration and anger can be converted to calm compassionate problem solving through this kind of training.  But beyond the benefits of problem solving is the skill of kindness.   By regularly practicing the kind act of helping others a child grows into a solutions oriented adult who takes responsibility for their actions proactively seeks to improve their world.

At Peak Performance MMA Southlake we’re training kids to be Superheroes who save the world using kindness.
